ABSTRACT

This study explores the way historic avant-garde movements like “Dadaism”, “Surrealism”, and “Futurism”, as well as the neo-avant-garde movements like “Fluxus”, “Happening” and “Situationist International” influenced the art of filmmaking. The subject is discussed from different perspectives regarding the artists and the works of art mentioned.

The studies which isolate film-making from other contemporary art disciplines are not sufficient in terms of comprehending any era and the artworks. Accordingly, this paper address the interaction between film genres such as “Avantgarde”, “Underground”, “Experimental”, “Art-house” or “Mainstream”, and other modern and contemporary art disciplines while taking the avant-garde theories, artists and artworks into consideration.
